ABSTRACT:
In February 2006, the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) released the first independent study of the fast-forming IPv6 marketplace. The report, entitled "IPv6 Economic Assessment" was prepared in conjunction with the independent research group RTI International in the Fall of 2005. The report examines the transition issues and potential financial costs surrounding IPv6, and looks at some U.S.-based companies that have already begun to leverage the benefits of IPv6.
In summary, the DOC report shows that the transition to IPv6 is very much on its way to becoming a viable, profitable market, and supports this conclusion with some attention grabbing highlights:
- The cost to transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is approximately $1 billion/year over the next 25 years.
- Of each dollar invested in IPv6, only about 8 cents is projected for the actual infrastructure update, with the other 92 cents being invested in taking advantage of it.
- The IPv6 market could generate 10 billion dollars of cost savings and additional services value every year. For every dollar invested in IPv6, we could expect a 10 dollar return in cost savings.
