ABSTRACT:

HTML5 is used as industry shorthand for different subjects, from the specific set of specifications at World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), to an aggregation of all that's new with the Web.

The term continues to be in the headlines and generates charged opinions, ranging from view that HTML5 is here today, to the suggestion that IT departments don’t need to take action for at least a decade.

In this article, Gartner argues that IT departments need to start thinking about HTML5 sooner rather than later.

Although a complete, formal and ratified HTML5 standard covering all that is currently in development is years away, elements of HML5 will be rolled out much before then, and IT departments will need to be ready.
